Team News Aug 14, 2018- need volunteers for Thursday

Hope each of you are enjoying the last few days of summer at the beach, pool, and of course getting fitter, faster, and stronger!   Tomorrow Soph, Jr, Sr have orientation and Thursday freshman have their orientation. There are many items that are suggested that you purchase at orientation, you do not need to buy PE clothes but we do recommend the ASB sticker as it gets students into all home sporting events free and the monies from the ASB sticker support our athletics programs.  We also encourage a donation to our transportation fund which you can find on the Buena on-line store

New this year from our athletic department is a request (mandatory?) that each team work at the Buena Bistro (stadium snack bar) for one football  game. This is in lieu of an additional athletic department wide fundraiser. The monies from the Bistro will help offset the cost of our entry fees.

We have been assigned to work this THURSDAY for the Frosh-JV games. (late notice I know- coaches found out today) We are needing 15 athletes and 4 adults to work starting at 3 pm until ? This is a new thing and the administration / A.D. are still ironing things out. I know that we can do a great job in the Bistro with all of our experience with Boogie Nights and other races. Please email Coach Burns or Coach Torres if you are able to work the Bistro. Or tell us at practice.

Our first race is on Aug 25, the Hoka One One Postal 2 mile, at Buena High School. The first race is at 7 pm.  More details to following….

4th of July Channel Islands 5k/10k – need volunteers

Each year the Channel Islands Harbor Foundation (& Mile 26 store) ask our team for volunteers for their 4th of July 5k / 10k race in return they donate money to our team. We need 15 – 20 athletes / including 3-4 adults for the race on Wednesday.

Time: meet at Buena at 5:15 am to car pool or meet directly at the race at 5:30 am

Where: 3900 Bluefin Circle, Oxnard

We should be finished before 10:30 am.

No Boogie Nights this week.

Harmon Canyon Trail

On Saturday at 8 am, we have the opportunity to run (hike, walk) the Harmon Canyon trail. It’s the trail that goes next to Missionary church and the Clearpoint homes. Hopefully soon the trail will be open to the public. The girls distance team will be there.  (Boys – check with your coach.)  As well as some runners from VHS and FTHS. Parents and family (dogs on leashes too) can join us. Everyone that is going to be there needs to sign and bring the attached waiver – see attachment below (The trail is still private property)

Park on Kimball Rd and then cross Foothill at the light, then walk to the first driveway and this will take you to the beginning of the trail.



Boogie Nights and Volunteer Oppty

Boogie Nights is a major fundraiser for our team that not only benefits XC but also track and field. We are encouraging our sprints, jumps, throws athletes to come out and volunteer along with our distance kids.

We would also love to see more parents participate in this race either in a single race or sign up for the series 7 week = $115, this is just over $16 per race and includes a light meal (previous meals were wraps, pull pork sandwich, hot dog, vegetarian option always served too) provided by Aloha Steak house and a beer provided by Firestone Brewery for those 21 and over. How many places can you go out to and get a sandwich or burger and beer for this price?  Plus you get outside on a Wednesday evening for some exercise- you don’t have to run – many walk, beautiful beach scenery, and most importantly it’s a fundraiser for our team. Also,  there is an opportunity this Sunday for students to earn community service hours, $20 for our team, and pancake breakfast by volunteering at the Love Run in Westlake.  We know it’s a drive out there and it is early in the morning, but some of our student athletes need more community service hours.

Awards Banquet

What a great season, we extend a big thank you to all who volunteered, donated and supported our athletes.

Here is information about our awards banquet:

Tuesday May 22- Banquet / Season Celebration

  • 5:30 pm Dinner and video.
  • Tacos by Juan Diaz $7 per person- fill out the attached form:  Taco Dinner Form and bring it with your money in an envelope with your name on the outside.
  • 6:15 pm Awards
  • Bring a dessert to share. (coaches like chocolate chip cookies and lemon flavored desserts 😉

Other Upcoming events:

Boogie Nights Summer 5k- Every Wednesday through July 25th.

  • This is a major fundraiser for cross country (and helps track too)
  • We work this event (set up, course monitors, registration, timing, food, clean up)
  • Meet at 4:00 pm for Set up by Crown Plaza and Aloha
  • Dress warmly and be prepared to run. Bring water / snacks
  • Usually finished with clean up by 7:30 pm


Sunday May 27 – Mountains to Beach Marathon

  • Need a minimum of 20 volunteers
  • Coaches will let you know what shifts to work.
  • Fundraiser for our cross country team
  • Complete Waiver


Monday May 21 – we start training again come to period 6 ready to work out.  Can you start training now – yes of course!

Gordon Stewart Invitation Saturday April 21

Thursday League Meet & Gordon Stewart Invitational

The regular season is winding down.  We have a league meet against San Marcos on Thursday at 3:00 pm.  They are a tough team and this is the last opportunity for athletes to qualify for Finals.  We will need help at the meet with the jump pit and timing.  Please email if you are able to help on Thursday.  We hope to see a lot of parents there to cheer on our Bulldogs!

Home Meet Vs. Santa Barbara Thursday

Congratulations to the boys sprint relays at Arcadia Invite on Friday. In the 4 x 200, they placed 3rd in the Seeded race and then came back to win the 1600 Sprint Medley Seeded race- just missing a school record in both events. Exciting stuff!!


Our league meet against Santa Barbara has been rescheduled for this Thursday April 12th @ 3:00 pm.  We are hosting this meet and REALLY need parent help.  All of the jobs are very easy – no college degrees required.  Please considering helping in the following areas – Click here to sign up:

Timing (Hold a timer, pressing the button, writing down athletes numbers)

  • Juniors – 7:00 – 8:15 am
  • Sophomores – 8 – 9:15 am
  • Freshman – 9 – 10:15 am
  • Seniors 10 – 11:30 (clean up)

Saturday April 14th – Spartan Relays – Some athletes are racing – Coaches will let you know your shifts for the pancake breakfast.

Spring Break News

Happy Spring Break – We hope everyone is enjoying the time off from school.  Remember we still have practice everyday – No rest if we want to be the best! Check with your  coaches if you are unsure when your practice are.


Some of our athletes have qualified for the Tiger Invitational this Friday, April 6th  – Coaches will let you know if you qualified.  Here is the link to the invitational page for more information.


Mr. Denning has been taking actions shots of our athletes during our meets. He uploads his photos here and they are available for purchase. He is very generously donating the proceeds back to the Buena Track team. Prints start at $2.50 or you can get a digital copy of the image for $5.00. He will try to take pictures at most meets so be sure to check back often. Here is the link for the action shots:


Pancake Breakfast is Saturday, April 14th. Thank you to those who have signed up to donate items.  We still have some needs left.

Pancake Breakfast April 14th

Our Pancake Breakfast is on Saturday April 14 from 7 am (setup) – 12 pm (cleanup).  Your students should have received their tickets on Thursday.

We are asking the athletes to do the following:

  1. Sell at least 10 tickets – Checks payable to Buena ASB Track and  Field
  2. Pass out flyers around neighborhood and post on Social Media (Parents too please). Here is a link to the flyer; Pancake Breakfast 2018
  3. Turn in money or unsold tickets by Thursday April 12
  4. Work the day of the event – Shift times will be assigned by coaches
